I always liked Mondrian's grids, since my college days, but I think my appreciation deepened when I could see their link to the natural world.
Nature is thought to be intrinsically beautiful because it has infinite complexity based on a few simple 'rules' - the natural world never loses complexity as one 'zooms-in'... for example, a hillside is pleasing. So, too, is a tree, and a branch, with its shaggy mosses, and a single leaf, and... even on the cellular level the complexity continues. So, I get what you mean, a simple work of art, or a blank concrete wall, generally, doesn't reward us further for our closer scrutiny... perhaps.
