I used to feel the same way, but have warmed to the design... the one-piece has since become ubiquitous hasn't it (though now cordless).

Out of choice we have a chrome cradle configuration PTT type T65, but it's in a cupboard now as analogue no longer works. And just for you... here's a side-by-side comparison of the 1950s Ericofon with the 1976 Ericofon 700:
