I don't want to be throwing links at you, but I will append a couple of reviews below for Cure and Before We Vanish (don't feel obligated to read).

Yes, Dir En Grey are one of my favourite bands and I am also liking Kyo's latest project, Petit Brabancon very much, which I believe is a 'super-group' and involves members of L'Arc-en-Ciel?

Another of my favourite 'extreme' bands, here in the UK, is the controversial Cradle of Filth, who I think would be a British equivalent to a 'visual system band' and use some lovely gothic-romantic horror imagery in their videos (adults only).

Though I also really enjoy the 'kawaii' end of the spectrum, with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu being a long-time favourite! J-pop seems endlessly inventive with songs about quirky subjects tied to Pop Art visual aesthetics. Mainstream Brit-pop seems very shallow and uninteresting by comparison. (I guess that being outside Japan, we only get to hear about the really good J-pop stuff, though?)

OK some links that may (or may not) be of interest:
