It's sad that tragedy struck when he decided to take action, though, but that's part of the poetic impact. I suppose he should have respected his own emotions and been honest with himself sooner. Then, whatever the outcome, he could move forward or move on.
Perhaps emotions that are never expressed become a type of ghost that haunt us, even in life.
What's the old adage? 'Better to regret something you have done than something you didn't do.'
