Great article. There is a temptation for an artist to become a brand, a recognised product, should something be more successful than their previous output. And there's nothing wrong with giving people what they want, so long as it's still what the artist wants. Otherwise, it's not art anymore, it's commerce.
I suppose a 'proper artist' expresses their defining style through their attitude, their creative process, rather than the end result? I would point to Marcel Duchamp as a fine example - his work is all vastly different from the rest of his work, yet it has a strong poetic identity running throughout.
