Enjoyed the review, I will have to re-view the film, now... The Hardy book was my 'O' Level text and I didn't like it at all. So, watching the film back then was tainted by that.
I do remember thinking the best bits of the book were the descriptions of countryside and environs, and those also stood out in Schlesinger's adaptation - as you say, Nic Roeg had a talent for such things.
