Thanks for your comments, Stephen. Yes, any artist must channel Duchamp — he’s still ‘The Don’ — and any deliberately trying not to, sort of, still are...
As for Cattelan, well, I like art that I don’t always like, and artists that I don’t necessarily agree with. His ‘struck pope’ is such a striking image though, I think it’s the one that first attracted me to his oeuvre. He’s of a similar ilk to Dali, and Pop Art, in that even children and grannies and people with the slightest passing interest in art will engage and react to his work, even if it drives them ‘bananas’!
Thanks for the insight into seeing a major exhibition of his work, I have only experienced his work via media and pastiche, so far, and I think he’s fine with that!
